A note from NENA President
Peter Guttchen:
Hi everyone,
I've been meaning to send out a shout to thank all of

huge success. I've gotten lots and lots of positive
feedback about the song. If you want to view our Council

A note from NENA President
Peter Guttchen:
To NENA
members and other interested folks,
A big round
of hearty applause, bravos and thank
yous to everyone who made our
Neighborhood Block Party and the
Roosevelt School Plant Sale on
Saturday, May 2 so much fun and such
a huge success - despite the soggy
skies. There are so many folks that
helped make this day a success that
I'm bound to leave some
people out, so please forgive my
failing memory in advance.
The thank you list is long, so I
encourage you not to forget to
scroll to the bottom of this note
for a list of upcoming events.
Thanks to all the Councilmembers,
City staff and volunteers who joined
together with us to celebrate our
awesome neighborhood including Joe
Hyer, Doug Mah, Karen Messmer, Craig
Ottavelli, Joan Machlis, Steve Hall,
Michael Mucha, Linda Oestrich, Signe
Feeny, Stephanie Johnson, Sheri
Zimny, Sophie Stimson, Patricia
Pyle, Michelle Stevie, Steve Wise,
Jennifer Kenny, and Erin Scheel from
InterCity Transit. And thanks to
Carolyn Law, the artist who designed
the public art for the SF
Street sidewalk, for her great work
and for helping plan the SF sidewalk
tour even though she was unable to
attend the event.
Thanks to all the volunteers who
made the Plant Sale such a huge
success and who rolled up their
sleeves to clean up the
Roosevelt
Gardens
and the school
grounds, and an especially big shout
out for Ginny Codd, Anne Fritzel,
Jenifer Thatcher, Amee Bahr, and
Melinda Spencer for their hard work
to organize, publicize and staff the
event.
Thanks to our neighborhood's own
marimba band -
Mukana
Mirimba -who brightened our spirits
on a gray day with their feel-good
music, and to my daughter, Emma who
brightened the faces of young and
old alike with her colorful face
painting.
Thanks to NENA's amazing Board
members who helped spread the
word about our great
neighborhood including Lilly Love,
Rozanne Rants and Cheryl Houghman.
Thanks to Chuck Schulz for his
awesome Tullis Street Tree Tour. A

And last, but not least, thanks to
all of you who raised your voices at
the April 28 City Council

Community Garden
A note from TJ Johnson about the new community garden
being built in the neighborhood by Sustainable South
Sound on Wilson St. NE:
Thanks to the generosity of the Walrod family who donated land for the use of community gardening and the work of the Sustainable South Sound, The Wendell Berry Community Garden became a reality in April. The garden
is located at 928 Wilson St NE. The garden is being
managed by a collective of about 17 members whose goals
are to grow food for the Thurston County Food Bank, grow
food for ourselves and provide a location to educate the
community and ourselves on various aspects of
sustainable living through gardening: soil preparation,
planting, growing, seed saving, beekeeping, food
preservation and a host of other topics. This garden
will provide the opportunity for people to come together
to learn and create community. For more information or
to learn about upcoming workshops, visit the garden
website at
Wendell Berry Community Garden.
NENA Board Meeting
- Our
next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 17 from 7 to 9 pm in the Roosevelt
music room. Join us to share your thoughts,
concerns, or ideas for our neighborhood!
