Stream
bug monitoring workshops
-
Thursday, June 18 and Wednesday July 8
- Stream Team is
looking for volunteers to stir things up this
summer, checking out "stream bugs." Stream bugs
(benthic macroinvertebrates) provide valuable
information about water quality and the biological
health of streams. They are also fun to collect and
examine.
-
- Volunteers are
invited to attend one of two free training sessions
on either June 18 or July 8 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The training will cover the rationale for biological
monitoring, the sampling protocol, and local data.
Trained volunteers will then sign up for one or more
summer monitoring days. Registration is required. To
register and find out the location of the event,
call Ann Marie Finan at 754-3355, ext. 6857 or
e-mail
finanam@co.thurston.wa.us. This
is your opportunity to help with the
future monitoring of Mission Creek and other streams
and creeks in our community.

Mission Creek Planning Meeting Update
-
Notes from our
neighborhood meeting on May 18.
Peter has been working
with City of Olympia staff, the folks at
Community Youth Services (CYS), and with other
neighborhood associations to revive and expand
our neighborhood's successful graffiti busting
efforts which suffered a set back when the
Touchstone group home closed late last year and
we lost their invaluable help in keeping
graffiti under control in our neighborhood.
From Peter:
- With this note,
I'm very excited to announce that beginning
this Tuesday, June 16, CYS will begin
sending out regular work crews in our
neighborhood to take over the clean-up work
the boys from the Touchstone group home were
doing for us before the home shut down. The
CYS crews will focus their initial efforts
along those streets that are most heavily
and most frequently tagged including Puget,
San Francisco and Bethel streets. These work
crews will also be helping us to maintain
the planting strips along the new sidewalks
on Quince and SF streets. I'll be sending
out an email with more details and a call
for volunteers to help with this effort in
the next two weeks. The CYS crew leaders in
our neighborhood are Pernell Overton and
Keith Pursell. If you see them out and
about, please share your appreciation with
them for their hard work in service to our
neighborhood and the community.
