Saturday July 15, 9 am until it's built!
Needed:
Materials and volunteers to build a temporary neighborhood kiosk

Materials needed:
Plexiglass
shingles to cover a 4x4 foot roof

Please leave a message with Melinda@neneighborhood.org, and I will pass it along to Janelle. Thank you!

Meetings
NENA Board Meetings
NENA Board members and all interested neighbors are invited to our next meeting on Wednesday, July 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. (location to be announced). We'll nail down our next steps for the Village Improvement Project and begin planning our fall potluck.
A huge THANK YOU to Kathleen and Chariti from the Olympia Village Improvement Project for their commitment and skill in helping us wrangle our diverse ideas into a tangible plan of action. We're looking forward to bringing these ideas to fruition and assisting VIP as they formalize the intersection improvement idea for other neighborhoods in Olympia.

And THANK YOU to Judy and Gene at the San Francisco Bakery and the Eastside Food Co-op for their generous donations of baked goods, fruit, and juice for each and every one of our Saturday morning workshops. Heck (community involvement aside), that's why some of us got up on those mornings!
Saturday, June 24 ~ Place-Making: The Vision Themes & ideas
We reviewed the ideas developed during previous sessions and defined what we'd like to see done to transform the intersection of Bethel and San Francisco Streets into a safe and beautiful neighborhood crossroads. We also began planning what to do first to realize that vision and celebrate what makes the northeast part of town so unique and wonderful.
Saturday, June 10 ~ Design Charrette: The Intersection Repair
Hands' on design of our "dream" intersection! Lots of fresh, innovative ideas, which we will discuss further on June 24 as we learn about transforming these dreams into reality.
Saturday, May 13 ~Site Analysis: San Francisco & Bethel
This week's workshop moved us outside to the intersection, where we observed traffic patterns and sketched ideas for staking our claim on this intersection. Check out Place-Making Conversation: Neighbor Ideas from January Meeting with Sidewalk Artist Carolyn Law.
Saturday, May 6 ~ Place-Making 101: Getting to Know You
At this fun and productive workshop, we got to know each other and considered basic themes that help people come together as a community.

Roosevelt Traffic Survey   Survey Results-Word    Survey Results-PDF
We received 35 responses to the Roosevelt Traffic Survey--thanks to all of you who took the time to let us know what you've seen at the Bethel/San Francisco entrance and how we might improve traffic flow and student safety. Take a look at our draft letter to the Olympia School District and others, which highlights the observed problems and proposed solutions.
Miller Ave. sidewalk
This is our top-priority project for 2006 - making it safe for students to get to school and all of us to get to Friendly Grove Park!  Construction is scheduled to commence late summer 2006, and should be complete by the end of September or early October. The sidewalk will be 6 feet wide and will run from Fir Street to Friendly Grove Road. It will be set back from the street by a  6- to 10-foot separation. Some sections will have a storm water ditch between the sidewalk and the edge of the travel lane. For more information, visit the City's Web site at http://www.olympiawa.gov/newsfaqs/parksandpathwaysnews/sidewalkprojects/Miller.htm.
San Francisco sidewalk
The City opened bids on Monday, June 19th and the low bidder was Nova Contracting in the amount of $388,790.  The contract is going to the City Council on Tuesday, June 27th for approval.  After approval, the City will begin processing the contract and set-up the preconstruction meeting.  Most likely the preconstruction meeting will be the week of July 3 or 10. Construction will begin the week of July 10 or 17.  The City will send out newsletters to the neighborhood in the next few weeks.  For more information, visit the City's Web site at   http://www.olympiawa.gov/newsfaqs/parksandpathwaysnews/sidewalkprojects/SanFrancisco.htm
Reeves Middle School Connector to East Bay
NENA and our partners, the East Bay Drive Neighborhood Association  and Woodland Trail Greenway Association, were awarded the Thurston County STEPs grant to design a connector to link East Bay Drive to Reeves Middle School. We are now working with a landscape architect to design the trail.

Neighborhood residents and Olympia City Councilmember Karen Messmer toured the Mission Creek Reserve on June 1. More details about the interim use work plan will be available soon.
