A message from
NENA's President, Peter Guttchen:
-
To
NENA members and other interested folks,
Here's the
latest on what's up on what's going down in your great
neighborhood....
We wrapped up our place-making
workshops on June 24th with hope, excitement, and a pile of
creative, visionary, practical and whimsical ideas for
transforming the intersection of SF and Bethel streets into a
beautiful, safe and vibrant neighborhood crossroads.
Check out our
and some of
the ideas generated at the workshops can be found in the
attached document which will be posted on our website
soon. Also attached are the
results,
which were conducted at the end of each workshop to find out what people
were learning at the workshops, what surprised them, and the
kinds of questions participating in the workshops raised for
them - it makes very interesting reading.
It's
now time to take our ideas and turn them into real-world
changes and we need your help. Please
join us at our next Board
meeting slated for Wednesday, July 19 at
7pm in my backyard at 1310 Central St. NE. At this meeting, we'll
set our next steps for place-making and begin planning our
Fall celebration.

Work
began on July 10! Details are provided in this
flyer prepared by the City. Major construction should be
completed by August 18!
- We
received 35 responses to the Roosevelt Traffic Survey--thanks to all of you who
took the time to let us know what you've seen at the Bethel/San
Francisco entrance and how we might improve traffic flow and student
safety. Take
a look at our
draft letter to the Olympia School
District and others, which highlights the observed problems and proposed
solutions.

This is our
top-priority project for 2006 - making it safe for students to get
to school and all of us to get to Friendly Grove Park! Construction
is scheduled to begin late this summer, and should be complete by the
end of September or early October. The sidewalk will be 6
feet wide and will run from Fir Street to Friendly Grove
Road. It will be set back from the street by a 6- to
10-foot separation. Some sections will have a storm water
ditch between the sidewalk and the edge of the travel
lane. For more information, visit the City's Web
site.

Thank you to all of the neighbors and
friends who shared their innovative ideas and insights at
our Place-Making Workshops! We've prioritized our goals and
will be devising a plan of action at our July 19 NENA Board
meeting (please join us!). Stay tuned for news about our
Fall Potluck, where we will begin the transformation.
- A
huge THANK YOU to Kathleen and Chariti from the Olympia
Village Improvement Project for their commitment and skill
in helping us wrangle our diverse ideas into a tangible plan
of action. We're looking forward to bringing these ideas to
fruition and assisting VIP as they formalize the
intersection improvement idea for other neighborhoods in
Olympia.
Neighborhood residents and Olympia City Councilmember
Karen Messmer recently toured the Mission Creek Reserve. More
details about the interim use work plan will be available soon. |
