NENA Board Meeting

The NENA board meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 7:00-9:00 P.M. in the music room at Roosevelt Elementary school. All are welcome!

Walkability Issues

A lovely new art-filled sidewalk will be built this summer on San Francisco from East Bay Drive to Bethel (and perhaps even to Garrison!)

Interested neighbors had the opportunity to meet the artist Carolyn Law, who will be making our new sidewalk a true destination in our neighborhood at our meeting on January 18. In addition, the City sponsored a public meeting on January 25 at Roosevelt to talk with neighbors about the sidewalk's design and construction using pervious concrete (so stormwater runoff won't be an issue), and to get input about the artistic elements to be incorporated in the sidewalk. San Francisco will be one of three "showcase" sidewalks throughout the city to incorporate art as part of a collaboration between the city's Parks, Art, and Recreation Department and Community Planning and Development Department.

The City and Olympia School District are working with NENA to prioritize the building of sidewalks on walking routes to Reeves Middle School

Reeves will be re-modeled during the next school year, so the school will be temporarily re-located to John Rogers school on 26th Ave. for the 2006-2007 school year. We have good reason to hope that sidewalks will be built on:

Miller from Fir to Friendly Grove this summer so kids can safely walk to John Rogers.

Quince from San Francisco to Reeves before school re-opens at Reeves in fall 2007.

Intersection Repair at San Francisco and Bethel

We are currently scheduling a series of workshops with the Village Improvement Project to brainstorm ideas about how we'd like to transform the intersection of San Francisco and Bethel into a public square" that reflects the flavor and diversity of our corner of town. At this time, four workshops are planned:

Saturday, May 6 ~ Place-Making 101: Getting to Know You

Saturday, May 13 ~ Site Analysis: San Francisco & Bethel

Saturday, June 10 ~ Design Charrette: The Intersection Repair

Saturday, June 24 ~ Place-Making: The Vision

Mission Creek Open Space

NENA members meet with Jonathon Turlove and City Parks, so we now have a much clearer sense of next steps in the process to create an interim use plan for the MCOS. A NENA work group will soon be hatched to get that rolling.
